Sensory Description:

Pouring a deep amber-orange, this wine unfolds with a fragrant bouquet of bitter orange, tangerine peel, quince, lotus, chrysanthemum, and hops. The palate reveals medium body, moderate-plus acidity, and soft tannins, wrapped around flavors of ripe citrus, dried apricot, and apple skin. A botanical thread adds further intrigue, finishing with a pleasantly nutty, earthy edge. Textured and structured, it’s a beautiful showcase of Assyrtiko in a skin-contact style.

Winemaker's Background:

Markogianni Winery is a family-run estate founded in 1982 by the Markogianni brothers in the valley of the Alpheus River, near Ancient Olympia. Now helmed by the second generation, Antonia and Yiannis, the winery is committed to highlighting the unique microclimate of the region and its indigenous grape varieties through sustainable viticulture and low-intervention practices. Their wines are a tribute to nature, tradition, and the rediscovery of rare, nearly forgotten varietals from the region's own-rooted vines.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve slightly chilled, around 12ºC (53.6ºF), in a white wine glass to accentuate its aromatic complexity. This orange Assyrtiko pairs wonderfully with bold, aromatic dishes such as orzo with shrimp and bisque, pork fillet in orange glaze, or herbed feta with grilled vegetables. Its structure and savory edge also make it an excellent companion to poultry with mango or roasted game birds.

For lovers of orange wines and adventurous palates, the 2022 Markogianni Winery Vorias & Helios Assyrtiko offers a captivating journey through the flavors of Greece—anchored in heritage, yet wholly contemporary.
