Bright, mineral-inflected, and built for freshness, the 2023 Lisboa Branco from Hugo Mendes offers a vivid glimpse of Portugal’s Atlantic-influenced coastal terroir. Grapes are harvested early to preserve acidity, fermented and aged gently, producing a white wine that balances crispness and minerality with expressive fruit and texture.

Product Details:

  • Appellation: Lisboa
  • Producer: Hugo Mendes (Ribeira de Santarém, Lisboa region)
  • Varietals: Typically a blend including Arinto, Fernão Pires, Vital (common white grapes in the Lisboa region)
  • Alcohol by Volume (ABV): 11.5%
  • Vinification: Stainless-steel fermentation, possibly aging on lees to add texture; no or minimal oak; bottled in a fresh, lively style

Sensory Description:

Pale straw to light golden in color with greenish reflections. On the nose, fresh citrus (lemon, lime peel), orchard fruit (white peach, green apple), mixed with subtle floral notes and stone fruit. There is a distinct mineral streak—wet stone or sea spray—owing to cool nights or coastal proximity. On the palate, bright, zesty acidity leads, with crisp citrus, apple, and a touch of tropical nuance. The lees aging (if used) gives a gentle creamy mouthfeel mid-palate without overwhelming the freshness. The finish is clean, dry, with lingering mineral and citrus echoes.

Producer’s Background:

Hugo Mendes comes from Ribeira de Santarém, in the Lisboa wine region, and operates in a modern, thoughtful style. He trained in biotechnology, and from around 2006 has been fully dedicated to winemaking under his own name. His wines often emphasize clarity, regional distinction, and transparent practices—minimal intervention, early harvests, clean fermentation, and expressive varietal character. The “Lisboa Branco” wines are among these, intended to showcase white grape varieties of the region in the light of Atlantic-influenced freshness.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve well chilled at 47-52°F (roughly 8-11°C). Excellent as an aperitif or paired with seafood (grilled fish, oysters), shellfish, light poultry dishes, salads with citrus or herbal dressings, or mild cheeses. Best drunk within 1-2 years while the acidity and freshness are vivid; can develop subtle depth if stored well a bit longer.
