A Symphony of Tannins: The 2013 Perticaia Montefalco Sagrantino

Heritage and Terroir

Nestled in the heart of Umbria, Italy, the Perticaia estate embodies a blend of tradition and innovation. Guido Guardigli, with his vast experience as an agronomist, chose this land for its potential to produce extraordinary wines. After retiring, Guardigli acquired Perticaia, meaning "plow" in the local dialect, symbolizing a new beginning in the fertile lands of Casale, near Montefalco. Together with the dynamic winemaker Alessandro Meniconi, they cultivate 16 hectares of lean, well-drained soils, dedicating half to the majestic Sagrantino varietal, renowned for its robust tannins and rich flavors.

Craftsmanship in Vinification

The 2013 Montefalco Sagrantino is a testament to Perticaia's dedication to quality and respect for tradition:

  • Grape Variety: 100% Sagrantino
  • Harvest Time: Second ten days of October
  • Vinification Process: The grapes undergo a lengthy maceration process on the skins for at least three weeks at temperatures below 30°C during fermentation, with subsequent stages at 25/28°C and 20/22°C until malolactic fermentation is complete.
  • Aging: A meticulous 36-month aging regime divided equally between French oak barriques or tonneaux, stainless steel vats, and the bottle.

Sensory Journey

  • Color: An intense ruby red with garnet hues, characteristic of the Sagrantino varietal.
  • Bouquet: A harmonious blend of spices and red fruits, with cinnamon and cherry aromas evolving into notes of dried prunes.
  • Taste: Full-bodied and persistent, its robust tannins are balanced by a pleasant bitterness, making it an ideal companion to rich dishes.

Pairings & Legacy

This Sagrantino shines when paired with hearty meals:

  • Ideal With: Red meat, game, and mature cheeses. Its structure and complexity enhance pork flavors with mushrooms, game ravioli, venison shank in red wine, and Grana Padano cheese.
  • Evolution: Properly cellared, this wine promises to mature gracefully for at least a decade, evolving in complexity and depth.

A Connoisseur's Choice

The 2013 Perticaia Montefalco Sagrantino represents more than just a wine; it is a piece of Umbrian heritage brought to life by the passion and expertise of Guido Guardigli and his team. It stands as a beacon of the region's winemaking prowess, promising an unforgettable experience for those who appreciate the art of wine.
