A weathered masterpiece born at the edge of the Mediterranean, Cap de Creus Rancio Sec is a sun-bleached whisper of the wild Roussillon coast, where wind-sculpted cliffs meet battered waves. From Domaine La Tour Vieille, a wine rooted in endurance and tradition, this rare oxidative gem channels centuries of Catalan identity through concentrated spirit, nutty depth, and maritime soul.

Product Details

  • Wine Style: Rancio Sec, oxidative red wine from perpetual Solera reserve
  • Varietal Blend: 90% Grenache Noir, 10% Carignan
  • Alcohol Content: 16% (fully fermented, no residual sugar)
  • Vinification & Aging: Fully fermented, then aged in partially filled barrels for many years before entering a foudre (large oak “perpetual barrel”) replenished annually since 1968, building incremental oxidative complexity
  • Terroir & Farming: Steep, hand-worked terrace vineyards on ancient schist soils in the Côte Vermeille, shaped by the fierce Tramontane wind and Mediterranean sun; low yields, sustainable practices
  • Release: Non-vintage, limited and rare, an expression of site and time

Sensory Description:

Pouring a deep amber glow, this Rancio Sec is aromatic of toasted walnuts, sun-dried raisins, candied prunes, and a faint marine brine. On the palate, it’s warm and richly textured, with flavors of caramelized fruit, nut brittle, dried fig, and tobacco that linger with depth and poise. The finish is long, savory, and hauntingly resonant, invoking craggy cliffs, aged wood, and brackish spray in each lingering note.

Winemaker’s Background:

At Domaine La Tour Vieille, Vincent Cantié and Christine Campadieu cultivate terraced vineyards in Collioure and Banyuls, hand-tending vines planted on some of the oldest schist soils in Europe. Tamed only by skill and the Tramontane wind, their vineyards yield concentrated, expressive fruit. Cap de Creus reflects both their labor and regional heritage, a contemplative wine that stands as a cultural statement as much as a vinous one.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve gently chilled between 46–50 °F (8–10 °C) in a small wine glass to appreciate its oxidative perfume and bold structure. Enjoy solo as a meditative end to a meal, or use it to enrich pan sauces for roast duck, game birds, or aged poultry. Pair with nut-crusted cheeses, dark chocolate, or sip alongside a crackling fire for a timeless and transportive tasting experience.

Port & Sherry

Port and Sherry, two fortified wines from the Iberian Peninsula, stand as enduring symbols of richness, complexity, and cultural tradition.

Though both are crafted through the fortification of wine with grape spirit, their divergent origins, styles, and aging methods yield profoundly different drinking experiences.

Port, hailing from Portugal’s Douro Valley, is opulent and fruit-driven, often enjoyed as a luscious after-dinner pour.

Sherry, produced in Spain’s Jerez region, offers a remarkable spectrum—from bone-dry and savory to decadently sweet—embodying both rustic charm and refined elegance.

Together, they represent the fortified category at its most expressive and storied.
