Sensory Description:
The nose opens with expressive aromatics of red and black currants, bouquet garni, mint, and tobacco leaf, layered over graphite and sweet licorice. On the palate, vibrant cherry, blackberry, espresso, and Herbs de Provence give the wine a lifted profile, while supple tannins and a core of toasty oak provide balance and structure. The finish is bright and persistent, offering a refined interplay of spice and dark fruit that will continue to evolve gracefully in the cellar.
Awards & Accolades:
- 93 Points – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate
- 93 Points – Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Winemaker's Background:
Founded in 1973, Joseph Phelps Vineyards is a family-owned estate that played a pioneering role in establishing Napa Valley as a world-class wine region. The late Joseph Phelps was one of the first vintners to produce a proprietary Bordeaux-style blend in California, and Insignia remains the winery's flagship expression. With 390 acres of estate vineyards across Napa Valley and a commitment to 100% estate-grown production, the winery continues to set the bar for consistency and excellence.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve at 60–65°F in a large-bowled Bordeaux glass to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and texture. This wine shines alongside prime rib, lamb chops with rosemary, or aged Gouda. Decant for 1–2 hours if opening in its youth or cellar through 2026 for added nuance.
The 2011 Joseph Phelps Insignia proves that great winemaking shines even in difficult vintages. With its layered aromatics, elegant structure, and aging potential, this wine upholds the legacy of one of Napa’s most iconic blends. Whether enjoyed today or laid down for years to come, it remains a powerful example of California craftsmanship at its best.
