The Renaissance of Tuscan Elegance: 2020 I Greppi' Greppicante' Superiore, Bolgheri Rosso
A Symphony of Heritage and Innovation:
Nestled in the heart of Tuscany's picturesque landscape, the I Greppi estate stands as a testament to the visionary pursuit of two Tuscan families who 2001, embarked on a journey to craft wines of exceptional character. The narrative took a compelling turn 2017 when a consortium of international wine aficionados took the helm, driven by a shared passion for the vineyard's potential and the region's winemaking legacy. This new chapter was not merely about stewardship but a transformative mission to elevate I Greppi into a beacon of global acclaim. The consortium's dedication saw planting over 1,000 species of flora, revitalizing the estate into a vibrant ecosystem where biodiversity thrives, enhancing the symbiotic relationship between the land and the vine.
Craftsmanship Rooted in Diversity and Dedication:
The 2020 'Greppicante' Superiore is a masterful expression of this dedication, weaving together Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot into a harmonious blend that mirrors the rich tapestry of Bolgheri. The estate's unique terrain, characterized by loamy and ferrous red sands atop deep clay, provides the ideal canvas for these varieties to express their full potential. A distinct spurred cordon training system, with a high planting density of 5,680 vines per hectare, ensures each vine flourishes, encapsulating the essence of Bolgheri in every bottle.
A Vintage Shaped by Nature's Whims:
The climatic narrative of 2022, marked by a hot and dry summer, challenged the vines, tempering their growth yet never diminishing their spirit. The late August rains arrived as a benediction, reinvigorating the vineyard and restoring balance, albeit with a slight decrease in productivity. This vintage embodies the resilience and adaptability of nature, with a harvest that spanned from mid-September to early October, each varietal picked at its zenith of maturity to ensure the finest quality.
Vinification: A Testament to Precision and Patience:
The vinification process is a meticulous endeavor, beginning with carefully selecting grapes, followed by destemming, gentle pressing, and fermentation in steel tanks under controlled temperatures. The commitment to quality extends through malolactic fermentation in steel and a 12-month maturation period in a mix of new and used French oak barriques. This dual approach—half the blend in oak, half in steel—strikes a perfect balance, allowing 'Greppicante' to develop its distinctive profile.
Sensory Journey: A Palette of Complexity and Grace:
Robed in ruby red, 'Greppicante' invites with aromas of ripe black fruit, underbrush, and spicy notes, leading to a pleasantly structured yet soft palate, culminating in a fresh and enduring finish. With an alcohol content of 13.5%, a total acidity of 6 g/l, and a pH of 3.43, this wine exemplifies the harmony between power and finesse.
Embodying Bolgheri's Legacy:
2020 I Greppi' Greppicante' Superiore is more than a wine; it celebrates Bolgheri's storied winemaking tradition, a tribute to the land's generative power, and a symbol of the relentless pursuit of excellence. It stands as a testament to the vision that drives I Greppi, an idea that marries the ancient with the modern, tradition with innovation, to create wines that resonate with aficionados across the globe.
