The 2020 Thunderchild is more than just a wine; it is a story of community, resilience, and purpose. Born from the vineyards planted on the grounds of Die Herberg orphanage in Robertson, this classical Bordeaux-style blend channels both tradition and generosity. Every grape is grown on the orphanage’s land, every stage of production is donated by sympathetic cellars, and every cent of profit goes to support vulnerable children. With such noble origins and artisanal craftsmanship, Thunderchild delivers depth, elegance, and meaning in every bottle.

Sensory Description:

Deep ruby in the glass, the 2020 Thunderchild presents an aromatic complexity of dark berries, cassis, and subtle herbal undertones, layered with cedar, graphite, and savory spice. The palate is full-bodied yet refined, showing blackcurrant, plum, and cherry fruit framed by firm, well-integrated tannins. A touch of earth and minerality adds depth, while French oak aging lends elegance and subtle toast. The finish is long, structured, and velvety, reflecting both terroir and thoughtful craftsmanship.

Winemaker's Background:

Thunderchild is not a conventional brand but a community project born from compassion. In 1918, after the Great Flu Epidemic, the Die Herberg orphanage was built in Robertson to care for children left without families. In 2003, the community planted a 5-hectare vineyard on the orphanage’s land, with all resources, from soil preparation to irrigation, donated. The wine is made for free by sympathetic cellars, with Springfield Estate overseeing distribution. True to Springfield’s philosophy, the wine is produced with minimal intervention, natural fermentation, and traditional methods, reflecting terroir with honesty and depth. 100% of profits support children in need, making every bottle a true labor of love.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve at 60–64 °F in a Bordeaux-style glass. This full-bodied red pairs beautifully with roast lamb, braised beef, venison, or mushroom risotto. Its structure and depth also make it a rewarding wine to enjoy on its own or to cellar for a few more years.

The 2020 Thunderchild is both a fine Bordeaux-inspired red and a testament to what a community can achieve together, offering not only elegance in the glass but also hope beyond it.
