Laws Whiskey House
Laws Whiskey House is redefining what great American whiskey can be, rooted in place, grounded in flavor, and crafted with uncompromising integrity. Located in Denver, Colorado, Laws is committed to producing grain-forward, terroir-driven spirits, built on a foundation of heirloom and heritage grains grown exclusively by two Colorado family farms. Their mission is to let the land speak through whiskey, not mask it.
From the start, Laws has rejected shortcuts. Every batch is distilled in-house, employing time-tested techniques and sour mash fermentation. They spent their first three years aging barrels and making no commercial sales, believing that time, in partnership with unique grains, is as vital an ingredient as anything else. Laws is also the first distiller in Colorado to bottle in bond, underscoring their commitment to rigor and provenance. Their flagship Four Grain Bourbon, composed of corn, heirloom wheat, rye, and barley, is available in both bonded and cask strength expressions, each one celebrating Colorado’s growing conditions and mountain climate.
One of Laws’s defining strengths lies in the rare grains they use, varieties that the mass agriculture industry left behind. The Cody family farm in the San Luis Valley supplies the wheat, rye, and barley, while the Ohnmacht family, in Colorado’s eastern plains, grows the heirloom corn. These grains demand more effort and yield less, but produce deeper, more expressive flavors, and that difference is front and center in every Laws bottle.
Colorado’s high altitude, wide temperature swings, and rigorous growing conditions are not obstacles; they’re essential collaborators. Laws leans into these challenges, viewing them as augmenters of nuance and character. Their spirits are born of place: the thin air, the day-night contrast, the mountain pull.
In late 2024, Laws opened its Whiskey Sanctuary, a striking 4,000-square-foot tasting hall and cocktail lounge. Designed as much to awe as to welcome, the sanctuary features a “Whiskey Church” with Gothic windows and hand-carved wooden pews, a full bar and lounge overlooking mountain views, and immersive tasting experiences that guide guests through distilling philosophy, barrel selection, cocktails, and education. This new space cements Laws not just as a distillery, but as a place of gathering, exploration, and shared ritual.
Laws also believes in community: they call their production team “The Village,” rejecting the notion of a lone “Master Distiller” in favor of collective craft. Their tours bring visitors through the “Whiskey Church,” across grain silos, through copper stills, and into tasting rooms where locals and travelers alike can sample flagship and experimentals side by side. The distillery’s story is one of fans and supporters, too. Laws draws whiskey lovers who appreciate both the audacity of bold flavors and the respect for tradition.
Recognition has followed. Laws was recently honored with the title of World’s Best Small Batch Bourbon and has earned Double Golds and high praise across national and international spirit competitions. Their Base Four Grain Bourbon and its bonded variants receive accolades for complexity, clarity, and balance, especially for a brand so young.
At its heart, Laws Whiskey House is about belief: belief in land, in grain, in patience. They don’t just make whiskey; they curate experience, with each batch, each label, each sip rooted in Colorado’s climate and in the cultivation of rarely used grain varieties. For those who seek whiskey with character, and character born of place, Laws is offering something that stands apart.
