Johan Vineyards

Located in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Johan Vineyards is a 175-acre certified Biodynamic® estate that has carved its reputation within the Van Duzer Corridor AVA. With 87 acres under vine, this estate embodies a holistic farming philosophy rooted in the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, striving to create a self-sustaining farm that reflects its unique terroir through its wines.

The estate’s commitment to Biodynamic principles is evident in its meticulous practices. Utilizing Steiner’s preparations 500-508, Johan Vineyards promotes a healthy and thriving ecosystem that includes a 30-acre biodiversity preserve of virgin oak savannah and riparian zones. This approach not only nurtures the vines but also fosters a vibrant soil microbiome, enriched by the unique calcareous sedimentary soils and maritime breezes drawn through the Van Duzer Corridor. These distinctive conditions result in wines of exotic complexity and a balancing acidic tension, epitomizing the character of the region.

In 2021, Johan Vineyards was named a Top 100 Winery by Wine & Spirits Magazine, an accolade that highlights its dedication to excellence. Under the leadership of Morgan Beck, the estate’s winemaker since 2018 and now General Manager, Johan Vineyards continues to uphold its Biodynamic ethos. Beck’s low-manipulation winemaking style ensures that each wine authentically expresses the growing season, the land, and the people behind its creation.

Ownership of the winery transitioned in 2021 to Katherine “Mini” Banks of Cowhorn Vineyard, aligning two premier Biodynamic producers. With an increased focus on permaculture and regenerative farming practices, Banks and her team aim to honor and expand upon Johan’s legacy. This synergy of vision is bolstered by the talents of vineyard manager Nathan Wood, whose integrative approach marries generational farming knowledge with innovative viticultural practices, and assistant winemaker Beth Herron, whose passion for intentional winemaking adds depth to the team.

Johan Vineyards continues to be a cornerstone of Oregon’s wine landscape, harmonizing progressive farming methods, innovative winemaking, and an unwavering dedication to producing wines that resonate with a sense of place.
