Yering Station
Yering Station, established in 1838, proudly holds the distinction of being Victoria’s first vineyard. Located in the heart of the Yarra Valley, it is a jewel of the region, celebrated for producing world-class cool-climate wines that embody expressive varietal character and integrity. The estate combines its historic legacy with modern innovation, making it a global destination for wine enthusiasts. With its iconic cellar door housed in a historic 1859 winery building, a breathtaking restaurant showcasing local produce, and a stunning natural setting, Yering Station offers an unforgettable experience.
Founded by the Ryrie brothers and later expanded under Swiss-Italian vintner Paul de Castella, Yering Station has been a cornerstone of Australian wine history. By the late 19th century, its wines had gained international acclaim, including a Grand Prix at the 1889 World Exhibition in Paris. After several transitions, the Rathbone family acquired the estate in 1996, ushering in a new era focused on blending tradition with innovation. Their commitment has elevated Yering Station to an icon of the Yarra Valley, producing wines that exemplify the region’s terroir.
The estate encompasses five vineyards across Yarra Glen and Coldstream, where diverse soils, elevations, and microclimates nurture 12 varieties, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier. Precision viticulture ensures every parcel is carefully managed to unlock its full potential. Sustainability is at the heart of Yering Station’s philosophy, with practices like drip irrigation, composting, and solar energy aligning with its membership in Sustainable Winegrowing Australia.
Yering Station’s wines reflect a deep respect for their origins, with techniques like wild yeast fermentation and maturation in French oak accentuating the hallmark cool-climate characters of the Yarra Valley. From approachable ranges like Little Yering and Elevations to flagship expressions like Scarlett and Reserve, each wine tells a story of time, place, and effort. Their sparkling label, Yarrabank, born from a collaboration with Champagne Devaux, further highlights their dedication to excellence.
Under the leadership of CEO and Winemaker Darren Rathbone, alongside a passionate and skilled team, Yering Station continues to innovate while honoring its storied past. Its enduring vision, celebrated globally, secures its place as a benchmark for cool-climate winemaking and a cherished icon of Australian viticulture.
