Podere Capaccia

Nestled in the heart of Radda in Chianti, Podere Capaccia is a beacon of modern winemaking excellence with deep historical roots. The estate, flanked by renowned neighbors such as Montevertine and Castello di Albola, enjoys an enviable position surrounded by dense forests and elevated terrain. Its ancient medieval hamlet, perched 550 meters above sea level, overlooks the stunning Radda valley, offering a unique combination of natural beauty and viticultural precision.

Acquired in 2010 by Herman De Bode and his wife Fanny, Podere Capaccia underwent a meticulous transformation from its rustic origins to a state-of-the-art winery. The De Bodes revitalized old vineyards, restored the medieval buildings to their former glory, and established a cutting-edge underground cellar to ensure optimal winemaking conditions. Their vision was to create wines that honor Chianti Classico traditions while embracing innovation.

Winemaker Alyson Morgan, a UC Davis graduate with two decades of Chianti Classico expertise, has been at the helm since 2012. Her scientific approach, coupled with her intuitive understanding of the region, drives the production of exceptional wines. Vineyard manager Donato Alvino, a seasoned expert with over 20 years at Capaccia, ensures meticulous vineyard care, fostering the estate’s reputation for excellence.

The vineyards, comprising diverse plots such as The Lawn, Cortaccio, and Le Campanelle, are cultivated with precision to maximize their unique terroirs. The soils—rich in sandstone, limestone, and shale—combined with the estate’s altitude, provide the perfect conditions for slow, balanced ripening of the grapes. This synergy of nature and human ingenuity results in wines that are both powerful and elegant.

Podere Capaccia’s history extends back to the 13th century when it served as a strategic outpost in the wars between Florence and Siena. Today, the estate bridges its storied past with a forward-looking philosophy, focusing on organic viticulture and sustainable practices to combat the challenges of climate change. Every step of the winemaking process, from hand-harvesting to careful barrel aging, is designed to craft wines of unparalleled quality, firmly establishing Podere Capaccia as a rising star in Chianti Classico.
