Casanuova delle Cerbaie

Casanuova delle Cerbaie is a distinguished wine estate situated just north of Montalcino on the renowned Montosoli hill, a subzone celebrated for producing some of Tuscany’s most elegant and aromatic Sangiovese wines. With vineyards graced by southeastern and southwestern exposures, the estate benefits from a cool-climate terroir that imparts femininity and grace to its wines.

The vineyards, rooted in the region's prized galestro soils composed of rocky schist, clay, and gravel, enjoy optimal drainage and fertility. This unique soil composition, coupled with the estate’s location in one of Montalcino’s most historic wine-growing areas, creates the perfect environment for producing expressive and refined Brunello di Montalcino.

Founded in the late 1970s, Casanuova delle Cerbaie gained prominence when it was purchased in 2008 by American entrepreneur and professional bridge player Roy Welland, a passionate wine connoisseur and former owner of the legendary New York restaurant Cru. Under Roy’s stewardship, the estate underwent modernization while preserving its commitment to traditional winemaking practices.

The estate’s vineyards are meticulously farmed according to organic principles, with all work—pruning, harvesting, and sorting—done by hand. In the cellar, esteemed enologist Paolo Vagaggini, known for his work with iconic producers like Fuligni, Il Palazzone, and Biondi-Santi, oversees winemaking. Fermentation is spontaneous in temperature-controlled tanks, with macerations tailored to each vintage. The wines are aged for 30 months in 20–25 hectoliter Stockinger casks before undergoing extended bottle aging, ensuring a harmonious and polished final product.

Casanuova delle Cerbaie produces approximately 2,500 cases annually, with a primary focus on Brunello di Montalcino. In exceptional vintages, the estate crafts a limited Montosoli Riserva, a rare single-vineyard expression made only six times in the past 20 years. The Rosso di Montalcino is composed of declassified Brunello grapes, offering remarkable value for its quality and structure.

With a history of accolades, including a place in Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of the World, Casanuova delle Cerbaie continues its legacy of producing wines of sumptuous elegance, aromatic depth, and extraordinary value. This dedication to excellence, rooted in the Montosoli terroir, makes Casanuova delle Cerbaie a standout among Montalcino’s finest producers.
